The Pillars of the Earth (Deluxe Edition) (Oprahs Book Club) by Ken Follett

A spellbinding epic tale of ambition, anarchy, and absolute power set against the sprawling medieval canvas of twelfth-century England, this is Ken Folletts historical masterpiece.

Abridged edition read by John Lee

Enjoyable, But Not Perfect
this is one of my top five novels of all time, the others being The Stand-Stephen King, Alaska-James Michener, Lonesome Dove-Larry McMurtry, and The Lord of the Rings. notoce they are all long sprawling epics. publishers just need to publish more books like this.

Whereas the Lord of the Rings is the prelude to any kid fantasy book by Brooks or Eddings or Salvatore, The Pillars of the Earth is the prelude to all the gritty realistic fantasy and historical novels by the likes of George R R Martin, Jack Whyte, Bernard Cornwell…

Ken Follett just did realistic gritty muddy down and dirty midievel storytelling first. This novel is as thrilling as it is long. i cant recomend it highly enough, despite the fact that oprah liked it. i suppose even she has taste now and then.
